2012 Kia Soul Updates

Kia introduced its new, 2012 Kia Soul, at the 2011 New York Auto Show. The audience went wild over its suite of fresh style updates and mechanical improvements.

Outside, the 2012 Kia Soul has been redefined by late-breaking projection-beam headlights accented with LED running lights and two new earthy-chic paint colors: Canyon and Moss. Inside, the range-topping Soul offers drivers a new hands-free connectivity system, UVO (co-developed with Microsoft), or an optional navigation system. This is the first time such features have been made available in the Soul!

we think you'll agree, however, that the most appealing update to the Kia Soul lies under the hood. Yes, Kia has fitted the forthcoming Soul with a 1.6-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine that produces 135 horsepower (hp) and 121 lb.-ft. of torque. To put this into better perspective: that's 11 percent more hp compared to the outgoing non-DI engine.

Mated with an all-new six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, this new 1.6-liter engine will offer envious fuel economy. To be exact: 28 mpg city/ 34 mpg highway. The outgoing Kia Soul is available with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic.

And, don't worry. For drivers who prefer a larger engine, Kia will continue to offer the Soul with a 2.0-liter engine as well.  Retuned with greater power, the new 2.0-liter puts out a total of 160 hp...18 hp more than its predecessor.

"After just two model years, we've given the 2012 Soul significant improvements in power, style and fuel economy, making this iconic vehicle the perfect package for consumers looking for something a little out of the box," said Michael Sprague, Vice President, Marketing & Communications, Kia Motors America ironically. "The Soul has always stood out from the crowd and is responsible for bringing new customers to the Kia brand and positioning the company for a series of record-breaking successes. With gas prices on the rise, this mid-cycle refresh adds even more style and fun-to-drive performance to the vehicle that started our design-led transformation while also improving fuel economy by 10 percent."1
